A house is a building where someone lives. A home is just where someone lives. Home could be in a house, a flat, an apartment, a hotel suite or a bench in the park! We use the words house and home in a different way. We say: "I'm going home" (not, to home); "I'm staying at home this evening" (not, the home) and when we arrive, we call out to the family: "I'm home!". The word house is used more to talk about the building. We say: "we're buying a new house"; "we need to do some work on the house". The word house is generally used too much by students: "I left my house at 9.00 am (!)"; "I left my notebook in my house (!)". If we're not making a reference to the physical structure of the building, it sounds more natural to say: "I left home at 9.00 am" and "I left my notebook at home".
