To make a car run it must be driven. Driving a car is done by the driver. The passengers can sit in the front or in the back and enjoy the ride. We say we go somewhere by car or in the car. First you get into the car and then you have to start the car using the car keys that are turned in the ignition. You pull away slowly and then speed up. If you have a long clear road ahead, you can get to cruising speed, which is a fast and constant speed. The speed limit in the UK on motorways is seventy miles per hour. Driving in the city is not so much fun. There are traffic jams, holdups and bottlenecks; all these mean the traffic snarls up or, in other words, you can only drive at a snail's pace. When you want to stop the car you can pull over to the side of the road or park in a car park. You switch off the engine and get out of the car. Now you are not a driver. You are a pedestrian.
