Podcast 231 - B1 emphasis with 'do'

Emphasis with do B1

Stress on the auxiliary verbs

Emphasis is used with lots of auxiliary verbs:

- I MUST get to the shop before it closes.

- You SHOULD try and finish the painting today. I'm fed up with smelling paint all over the house.

- I do like your new tie. It's so colourful!

- I do want to go and see that new film Anora. You know, the film that won all those oscars.

- Well, I saw it. I don't think it's suitable for you, if your favourite film is the Sound of Music.

- I do wish it would stop raining. I can't get out at the weekend.

Third person:

- Mary does like new job. She has chances of promotion now that she never had before.

2nd person

- You know, you do annoy me with all the regaton music you play at full volume in your bedroom.

Past tense

- I did want to go away last weekend, but we gave up the idea because of the rain.

In negatives:

- You helped yourself to my biscuits again, didn't you?

- I didn't, actually. I'm on a diet. It must have been Yvonne.

Questions:

- Where have you been all this time, Peter?

- I borrowed your car, Mum. Just went out for a short drive.

- You did, did you? And without my permission. Well, you're grounded for the rest of the week.

I do like to be by the seaside

Edna Bucket and Holly Daze are sitting with towels and aluminium paper on their heads in the hairdresser's.

Edna Bucket - Ooh. Hello, Holly! I didn't recognise you under the towel. Haven't seen you for a while.

Holly Daze - Hello, Edna. Nice to see you again. It's true, I haven't been into the hairdresser's for ages. I don't come regularly as I used to.

Edna - So what are you have done today?

Holly - Nothing special, you know. Just the basic perm*.

Edna - Well, a perm does suit you, Holly.

Holly - What about yourself?

Edna - Ooh. I'm having about everything done. Then a nice pink rinse**. I do like my pink rinse, as you know.

Holly - Yes, yes. I did like the blue rinse for myself. It's just a bit too expensive for me, these days.

Edna - Oh, I'm sure you can afford it, Holly. You've got to treat yourself now and again. As a matter of fact, Harold and I have had a bit of luck recently.

Holly - Have you? Harold had a promotion or something?

Edna - Well, better than that. We've had a bit of luck on the horses.

Holly - You haven't.

Edna - Would I tell a lie? Harold got a tip from somebody he knows, and we both put a thousand each on a horse called Jack Sprat.

Holly - A thousand pounds? Each?

Edna - Why not? You do have to live a little, you know, Holly! Well, Jack Sprat was at 25 to 1, and it came in first. So, do your calculations!

Holly - Eh... That's....

Edna - Never mind, Holly. That's fifty-two thousand pounds if you pay your tax first - and we did.

Holly - You did, did you? Well, that's very nice. What are you thinking of doing with it?

Edna - Well. We do like Benalmadena - you know, on the Costa del Sol.

Holly - Costa a fortune. That's what I say...

Edna - Well, we're taking a month's holiday in Benalmadena. And then, who knows!

Holly - I do wish I could tell you a happy story too, Edna, but things don't look very good from my end.

Edna - Problems with Wilfred?

Holly - Well, Wilfred has had problems, yes. He's lost his job at the factory.

Edna - You're joking!

Holly - I wish I were. At 58, it's going to be very difficult to find another job.

Edna - Redundancy?

Holly - Yes, but the company can't afford to pay compensation. It's all a bit uncertain at the moment.

Edna - Well. I'm sure Wilfred will find another job. He's a very clever man is your Wilfred.

Holly - Well, things are difficult at the moment. Can't pay all the bills. I do like to say I can pay the bills - but not any longer... In fact, I was thinking... you know, now you've come into all this money. Perhaps...

Edna - Miriam! I think I'm done now. Do come and have a look!

Miriam the hairdresser - Hello Edna. Let's look at your hair, then. (She takes off the towels.) Oh, yes! That's lovely. Take a look in the mirror, Edna. You look ten years younger.

Edna - I honestly do feel ten years younger. Benalmedena - here I come!

Miriam - Off tomorrow, then, are you, Edna? With your husband?

Edna - Yes, first thing tomorrow morning. I do like a good hair-do before going away. Well, nice to see you again, Holly. I'll send you a postcard.

Holly - Do have a lovely time, Edna. Oh, dear...

*perm = making hair fixed in curls on the head.
**pink rinse = having your hair a light pink colour
