B2 phrases to listen for. What is the context of each phrase?

1) seasonal - refers to a time of year e.g. seasonal decorations (during the Christmas season)

2) remarkable - a wonderful qualities, for a person, perhaps intelligent, clever.

3) astonished - very surprised

4) absurd - ridiculous, very strange

5) cautious - being very careful because you are suspicious about something

6) arrogant - showing yourself to be superior to others

7) uncertain - not sure about something

8) delightful - wonderful, lovely

9) worthwhile - you do it because you know the results will be positive

10) unbearable - you can't stand something, usually a situation you want to get away from it

11) exceptional - of superior quality than other examples of something

12) priceless - so valuable it has no price at all

 

Answers to listening to the context of the B2 phrases:

1) seasonal
But that type of seasonal weather that makes you want to dance so as to warm up in the sweet fresh air and the golden sunlight.

2) remarkable
- A face looked up, and it struck Scrooge as remarkable that it was so clean.
- A remarkable boy!

3) astonished
The boy looked astonished that anybody should ask such a question.

4) absurd
'It's Christmas Day!' said Scrooge to himself. 'I haven't missed it. The ghosts have done it all in one night. Absurd though it might seem.

5) cautious
The boy looked up again, his face now cautious. He knew this was Mr Scrooge; the arrogant old man everybody hated.

6) arrogant
He knew this was Mr Scrooge; the arrogant old man everybody hated. Although he was wealthy, he would not give a penny to anybody despite so many starving people in London.

7) uncertain
Still feeling uncertain about what this man might want from him, the boy replied. 'Yes, of course, I do, sir!'

8) delightful
'What a delightful boy, you are!' said Scrooge.

9) worthwhile
Scrooge thought to himself what a worthwhile gesture sending the turkey would be.

10) unbearable
It now seemed unbearable to Scrooge to think how much Bob Cratchit's family were suffering from hunger.

11) exceptional
Well, what an exceptional turkey it is! It's surprising that he could have stood up will all that weight on him.

12) priceless
And Scrooge said often afterwards that, of all the priceless words he had ever heard in his life, those words: merry Christmas, were the most priceless of all.
