(Also possible with all these answers is the use of "that": Mary said that she'd... Question 2 uses "these" because houses are still expensive a week later.)

2) John said houses were very expensive these days.

3) Dave said he couldn't find his keys then.

4) Steve said he must finish the report that morning. / Steve said he had to finish the report that morning.

5) Melissa said he wouldn't speak to her that day.

6) Mary said he wasn't coming that evening.

7) John said he'd do that the following / next day.

8) Dave said he didn't want those ones.

9) Steve said he'd seen that programme three weeks before.

10) Melissa said she'd stayed in bed the day before.
